Turning Tree & Root Burl Natural Edge Bowls Tutorial

In this lesson you will learn how to turn a natural edge bowl out of burls and root burls, turning techniques, bowl gouge angles, burl preparation, and orientation and how to move the orientation using the tailstock, form, base size, sanding techniques, finishing with friction drive, base finishing using a Micromotor fitted with a bur, sanding options, embellishment options.

For this course you will need:

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Orientating the burl, creating the spigot and size, turning techniques, lathe speeds

  • Initial tailstock helping to locate the burl in the chuck and remaining in position for the first few cuts of hollowing, turning techniques, truing the outside form if required, using a wall thickness gauge

  • Sanding techniques, PPE, lathe speeds, sanding tools, what you should be trying to achieve a crisp edge

  • Use of micro motor and a bur to remove the waste, sanding technique with small disc, checking tops  for orientation, finishing, filling cracks, embellishment options

    • PPE

    • Bowl gouge 10mm or larger

    • Skew chisel

    • Chuck fitted with dovetail jaws

    • Something to remove some material to flatten an area where the drive will go e.g Saburr tooth bur or a chisel

    • Spur drive

    • Small piece of waste for a friction drive and a piece of matting

    • 50mm velcro sanding disc and drill

    • Bandsaw to trim waste

    • Micromotor Machine or Dremel
